Hematology/Oncology Significantly Lacking Diversity in Clinical Trial Leadership

Fundamental changes are urgently needed to make hematology/oncology clinical trial (CT) leadership selection more transparent instead of relying on informal networks and sponsor relationships, according to Sandhya Panch, MD, MPH, who is an associate professor, Hematology and Oncology, University of Washington School of Medicine/Fred Hutch Cancer Center in Seattle. She contends that tracking and publicly reporting who leads trials by gender, race, region, and seniority could help change the current practices.

“We need to build stronger mentorship and sponsorship pipelines so women are actively nominated for national and international trial roles to ensure women have equal access to the things that lead to phase 3 leadership, such as multicenter collaborations, protected research time, and institutional support,” Dr Panch told Hematology Advisor in an interview.
