A Majority Without Authority
On the surface, hospitality looks like one of the most female-dominated industries in the global economy. Women make up roughly 52 to 70 percent of the hospitality workforce across major markets. Yet this numerical dominance conceals a persistent hierarchy: the roles women occupy and the roles men occupy are rarely the same roles, and the difference maps onto a much older distinction between relational labour and strategic authority. At the delivery end, this shows up as near-total feminisation: housekeeping is around 71 percent female, and reception runs similarly high depending on the market.
