Synopsis
Women in India aspire to leadership roles, but corporate progress is slowing. Many companies report no increase or a decline in women leaders. The mid-career stage sees women exiting the workforce. Perceptions of promotion fairness have decreased. Strengthening promotion pathways and addressing mid-career attrition are crucial for future diversity gains.
Corporate India’s push for gender diversity in leadership may be losing steam, even as women’s ambition to lead remains high.
A new report by the All India Management Association (AIMA) and KPMG India shows that 79% of women professionals aspire to leadership roles, with more than half aiming for the C-suite. Yet, nearly 30% of companies reported no increase — or even a decline — in women leaders over the past five years, almost double the figure reported in 2024.
