Gone are the days when business leaders could separate “people issues” from “business issues” and manage them through a set of preplanned process steps. Today’s leaders face more complex and frequent challenges, with blurred work-life boundaries and the rise of technology and artificial intelligence. It’s no surprise that workplace mental health issues have significantly increased, leaving senior leaders feeling like they are walking a tightrope to manage it all.
The human brain is not naturally equipped to balance understanding feelings and driving tasks at the same time or to strike a perfect balance between focusing on collective and individual interests. As Matt Lieberman highlights in his book Social, our brains are wired to connect and tend to lean more toward either understanding feelings or driving tasks.
