Workplace safety can significantly impact a company’s bottom line. Workplace injuries cost U.S. companies an estimated $58.78 billion each year, according to the 2025 Workplace Safety Index. So what distinguishes companies with strong safety records? Researchers have identified a key factor: having women in executive roles.
The link between female leadership and fewer workplace safety violations at U.S. companies was identified in a longitudinal study by researchers at Melbourne Business School (The University of Melbourne), Lingnan University and City University of Hong Kong, published in a December 2025 issue of the Journal of Management Studies. This finding adds to prior research identifying other positive business outcomes from having women on leadership teams.
