Promoting women’s leadership: Mariya Frey joined the development of recommendations as part of the initiative “Women in media”

Women make up the majority of Ukrainian media editorial staff, lead teams in crisis situations, and implement management changes. However, the “glass ceiling” remains in place in large media outlets, and the workload on female employees is increasing, especially in the context of full-scale war. This is stated in a joint policy paper (a document with recommendations for state or institutional policies — ed.) prepared by participants in the “Women in media — Ukrainian-European Support Program” and presented on December 15 at the Media Center Ukraine.

One of the program participants was Mariya Frey, a member of the Managing Board of Suspilne Ukraine, responsible for news and regional broadcasting. Together with nine other media professionals from leading Ukrainian newsrooms, she spent three months researching the challenges women face in the media and preparing recommendations for the development of women’s leadership — from personal practices to editorial policies, industry standards, and state support. The program included training, strategic sessions, and a working trip to Germany, where participants studied personal, editorial, and systemic barriers in the media sphere in greater depth.
