Focusing on female leadership shouldn’t just be for International Women’s Day. I am a huge advocate for championing and celebrating both female leaders and those with an ethnic minority background.
Why? Because I am both. I have worked in two senior national positions as a driven and ambitious young Indian mother. And I faced barriers and prejudice because of my gender, my race, my age and my children.
We all talk about diversity, equity and inclusion and like to stand by our organisation’s commitment to it, but do we really understand the barriers our people face? And, more importantly, how can we act as allies to help them progress?
I am fortunate to work for an American company as an executive leadership coach who works with women with minority backgrounds to help them progress into leadership positions. I also co-founded the Female Pharmacy Leaders Network because we wanted to create a safe, empowering and uplifting community of like-minded women (and male allies) who champion and celebrate other women. We do this in our spare time as busy business owners and mothers!
