What Does The Sam Altman Firing And Rehiring Mean For Female Leaders?

Last week was a dramatic one in the world of technology, specifically for one of the most famous CEOs of the decade, Sam Altman. There were shockwaves across the industry upon news that the board of Open AI had ousted Sam Altman as CEO of the revolutionary start-up he co-founded in 2015. It came hugely unexpected by a company on an astonishing growth trajectory who, in late September, was reportedly talking to investors about a share sale that would value the company at up to $90 billion.

There was instantaneous broadscale outrage in support of Altman and near mutiny against a board deemed naive to commercial realities and too consumed by the safe application of one of the most consequential technologies of the century. In a June interview at Bloomberg Tech Summit, Altman stressed the importance of the democratization of safety and power in AI, “The board can fire me, I think that’s important,” he said. However, it seems they cannot. He was reinstated five days later.
