A lot of people think the battle for equal rights for women began and ended during the years 1972 and 1982. The fact is that, from the founding of our country, inequality has been an issue.

In 1776, John Adams received a letter from his wife Abigail, which stated: “In the new code of laws, remember the ladies and do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands.”

He replied: “I cannot but laugh. Depend upon it, we know better than to repeal our masculine systems.”
