Local Scout Selected as First Female Top Leader at the National Jamboree

The Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) normally holds its National Jamboree every four years since 1937. This year’s celebration is scheduled from July 19 – 28 at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. A total of 15,000 Scouts will be embarking on a 10-day adventure, however, there will be a new twist. The 2023 National Jamboree will be the first ever to include Scouts BSA female participants.

At a recent Jamboree shakedown weekend, Lea McKenna, age 13, of Scouts BSA Troop 19, chartered at St. Rose of Lima Church, Short Hills NJ, was selected as one of the first ever female Senior Patrol Leaders (SPL) for a National Jamboree troop. A total of 17 female Scouts will be attending from Northern New Jersey Council; however, female units from Florida and Louisiana will be conjoined into a single unit. Troop 3136 will have a total of 28 female Scouts from three states who will have Lea as their top youth leader.
