When Cindy Hook was appointed chief executive of Deloitte Australia in 2015 she did not want to talk about the fact she was a woman.

“I wanted to prove myself as a great business leader and I didn’t want it to be about my gender,” Hook says.

The trouble was, as the first female ever to run one of Australia’s big four accounting firms her gender was an unavoidable focus point.
