My colleague Professor Charles Whitaker at Medill at Northwestern told me that when he was apartment hunting in his early days as a professional, he found he kept being denied apartments after making appointments to see them. He finally explained on the phone to a prospective landlord that he was black and the response was “You don’t sound black.”
