BEVERLY — As a new member of Fortunato Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 545, Christine Tron didn’t want to be presumptuous when it came to seeking a leadership role.

But when Tron put in her paperwork to be nominated as junior vice commander, the group’s No. 3 position, her fellow members told her she was overqualified.
