When you think of a disempowered woman, who comes to mind – a kidnapped schoolgirl from Nigeria; a Somali mother in a refugee camp; a child bride in Niger? It is certainly true that women in these situations are suffering, but you may be surprised to learn that among the ten countries with the largest numbers of disempowered women, only one is in Africa. The stereotype of the African woman as the symbol of global women’s oppression is just plain wrong.
